Ryan Howard, first baseman for the Phillies, leads the major leagues in opposite field homeruns. Why then to opposing teams continue to overshift to the right side of the infield? The purpose of an infield shift is to encourage the batter to try and hit the opposite way - a single is better than a homerun. In this case it appears that the opposition is encouraging Ryan Howard to hit oppostie field homeruns - and it is working very wellL 23 homruns - 14 to the opposite field. Last night Tampa Bay tried playing four outfielders - no infielders on the left side of the infield. So what did Howard do? He ripped a single to right despite the overshift.
